Blues for you

Hello Blues Fans --

Thngs have been somewhat quiet since the end of the Lowcountry Blues Bash, but hopefully you've had a chance to rest up by now, and are ready to get out to see more music. This Friday, Feb 26th, the Wyatt Garey Band will play at A Dough Re Mi in Mt Pleasant, starting at 9pm, and the cover is only $5 - a great deal! Wyatt and his dad Ranny often come and play for us at our Tuesday night jams, so come out and show them your appreciation on Friday night! And they'll be filming this show, so you might end up seeing yourself on tv when it airs.

On Saturday night the 27th, there are a couple of great choices as well. Shrimp City Slim and his band play at the Dough, starting at 8, for only $5. Shrimp organized the entire Lowcountry Blues Bash, and this is your chance to see him play the blues and thank him for bringing all those great artists to Charleston for us to see. Or there's an option on the James Island side of town - you can see Smoky Weiner and the Hot Links play at The Smoky Oak Taproom at 1234-C Camp Road. Smoky will play his harmonica and sing some funny songs for you. . .

And of course on Tuesday, don't miss the jam at A Dough Re Mi! We had some new jammers who showed up last week, and everyone who came had a really great time.
Later that same night, the North Mississippi Allstars play the Pour House, with opening band City Champs from Memphis who start at 10pm, $20 (adv tix).

Have fun, and stay safe!

A special jam on Tuesday, February 16th

Hi Blues Fans -

We've got a special jam this Tuesday, Feb 16, at A Dough Re Mi. Scott Holt, formerly the guitarist for Buddy Guy, is coming in to put on a show and to help host the jam. It should be a very fun night! Usually the jam is free, of course, but not during the Blues Bash. So, if you're a current member of the LBC, bring your membership card and you'll pay just $5 to get in. Non-members pay $10. If your card is from last year, just bring money to renew, and we'll get you a new card for 2010. We definitely appreciate all the people who join up to show their support of the Lowcountry Blues Club, and hope you'll all get to come and enjoy this special night!

And in other news, our own jam-master Dan Wright and his band played the opening slot for Steve Simon's night of blues at the Charleston Music Hall this past Saturday night, and they put on a great show! Then later they kicked off the after-party at South End Brewery, and jammed with Billy Gibson, The Prince of Beale Street. Dan's guitar playing was as awesome as always, Landon Moore was jamming on bass, and Quentin Ravanel wowed the crowd with his drumming -- a very fun night! And Steve Simon invited the LBC to have a table in the lobby to help spread the word about our club -- we thank him for giving Dan's band a chance to play, and for helping us to make the club more well-known around town!

The Blues Bash has been wonderful again this year, and we hope you've had a chance to get out and see lots of shows. Don't forget to thank Gary Erwin if you see him while you're out and about!

Speaking of shows, you may have missed Sarah Cole's band, as they played at the same time as our Tuesday night jam last week. They did a wonderful job as well, and we hope you'll get the chance to see Sarah play this coming Tuesday, with Scott Holt, at the Dough. . .

One note of sadness -- I was so sorry to hear about a car accident which took the life of Lil Dave Thompson, who was on his way home to MS after playing a show at Home Team/ Sullivans Island. You can go to his website, www.lildavethompson.com, to learn more about him, his family, and his music. Keep in mind that life is fragile, and you just never know what might happen. But here's hoping that all of you stay safe, and can come out to a blues show sometime soon. . .

Tommy Thunderfoot 9pm Sat. Night at Bowens

Well,we couldn't get our foot in the door with the bash, but we have a blues gig, none the less, coming up this Saturday night. We're all fired up and we're gonna shake the boat house best we can,JoJo and Myself along with Jonathan "the eye candy" Williams on drums-you won't wanna miss this. We plan to start at 9,but there's usually a dinner crowd,so we may ease into it ,we'll see... With Valentine's Day to follow, this should be quite a night, but it's also Bam-Bam's birthday and it could get crazy. We hope to see a lot of our friends out because you guys are the reason we play these days,so join us for some fun and craziness, this Saturday night.I haven't been to the Bowen's in a while, but be prepared for a cash-only bar and dress warm.
Hope to see ya out there, T

Saturday night February 13th at Bowens Island Dockhouse there will be a party featuring Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators. Tommy's got a very tight band so be prepared for a high energy show!! You can't beat the entertainment or the venue! It's a measly 5 bucks.

Gig starts at 9, the new bar at Bowens will be open and its as cozy as cozy gets! This bar was built by the movie crew of "Angel Camouflaged" so pretty soon Bowens will be on the big screen all over the country! (But only you will really know where it is!)

Come out for a great party- support Tommy Thunderfoot and all the local blues people. There are many top quality acts like Tommy in our area, most of whom are left out of the local blues events every year because, naturally, it does create interest and excitement to have out of town acts and of course we are very glad to have them. Truth is though, Tommy Thunderfoot compares very favorably to many of the best acts here for the "Bash". Check him out.

Blues bash and the jam

I hope everyone is enjoying the Blues Bash so far! Just wanted to let you know that if you have re-joined the blues club for the year 2010, you need to bring your membership card to A Dough Re Mi on Tuesday night for the jam. The jam will be free to members this coming Tuesday, but it's $5 for non-members. If you still need to sign up for the new year, you can do that on Tuesday at the door ($10 for individuals, $25 for family or band, free for the under 21 set).

Then next Tuesday, we have a special rate for the jam because Scott Holt will be there to put on a show and then host the jam -- that will be $10 for non-members, and just $5 for members -- so keep that membership card in your wallet, and be prepared for some fun times. . .

Blues Bash is here!!

Hello Blues fans! The long-anticipated 20th annual Lowcountry Blues Bash is here!! If you haven't already done so, you need to get yourself a schedule from www.bluesbash.com and start strategizing -- there's so much to see and do! In fact, there's so much going on that we can't even begin to tell you where you should go. There are too many good choices! And most of these shows are low-cost or no-cost, so they won't break your budget. . . So you'll just have to make your picks and try not to think about what you're missing, because unless you've figured out how to clone yourself, there's no way to see it all. And if you see Gary Erwin while you're out and about, be sure to thank him for all the work he puts in to this event each year!

There's also a new event, billed as the "Charleston Blues Festival", which is a concert on Saturday, Feb 13, at the Charleston Music Hall. This is put on by a newcomer to town, Steve Simon, and will feature our own Dan Wright and the New Beat opening the show, and includes performances by Billy Gibson, Zac Harmon, and Shemekia Copeland -- it's a great venue, and sure to be lots of fun! Tickets are available at etix.com.

Look for other Lowcountry Blues Club members and friends playing during the Blues Bash as well: Sarah Cole (listed as Cole Train), Jeff Norwood, Robert Paige and the Holy City Sinners, Jeff Liberty and Electric Mud, Hitman, My Buddy Todd, Shrimp City Slim (Gary Erwin himself), and more. . .

So have fun, and stay safe! And if you see a great show, and want to tell your fellow Blues Club friends about it, feel free to make comments at our blog -- just go to www.lowcountrybluesclub.blogspot.com -- or you can leave comments at our facebook page as well -- we'd love to hear from you!

Memphis and upcoming events

First, a report from Memphis, from Lua Wells: Our own Lowcountry Blues Club had two groups, plus fans, who went to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis this past weekend, and it was a blast! Dan Wright and the New Beat played in the Band category, and The Sarah Cole band was in the Youth Showcase. In the band category, there were more than 100 bands from the U.S., Canada, and all over the world! What an amazing event! There were about a dozen clubs and theaters on Beale Street hosting the bands for the semifinals on Thursday and Friday nights, and the music was outstanding. Dan and the band (including Landon Moore on bass guitar, Quentin Ravenel on drums, and a friend of Landon's on keys) put on two amazing performances and the crowd loved them!! The fans who came from Charleston were whooping and hollering, proud to call them our own. Though they didn't get a chance to play in the finals this year, the band that won in their venue went on to achieve third place status (and that's out of 100-plus pretty awesome bands) -- so not too shabby, I'd say. . .

Then there was the Sarah Cole Band, which played in the Youth Showcase, and also wowed the crowd (including Wyatt Garey on guitar, Chris Cool on bass, and Quentin on drums again). They too made us proud!! Everyone who went had a great time, and made lots of new friends. I hope to go again next year, and hope we'll have an even bigger crowd of LBC friends going, too.

Now back to your regular blog, this week from SAM:

Hey Blues Babes!

As the Lowcountry gears up for the Blues Bash, I thought the local scene would slow down so that we can be well -rested when the Big bash Blues comes callin' next week. Silly MOI!! We have some good shows coming up that will likely mean you are hoarse by the time the Bash starts, and your voice won't recover from the singin' and cheerin' until some time this summer... maybe May??

Okay, now the upcoming weekend's activities -- Every Friday, don't forget to check out the jam with Smoky Weiner at Bowens Island, 6:30-10 pm.

From Jojo Wall: This Saturday January 30th, we announce the return of Momma to the Lowcountry. She and the newly formed Redemption Band will be playing at Centre Point Bar and Grill (in the Tanger outlet area, across from the N. Charleston Coliseum) from 8-12. There will be no cover charge at one of N. Charleston's finest venues. Come see your Momma!

On Sunday night at Home Team BBQ in West Ashley, come support our own Dan Wright and the New Beat as they put on an early show, 7pm, featuring their hard-driving funk and soul sounds, for only $5. If you missed them in Memphis, come see them here!

Another option on Sunday is the Pour House which announced a big local band showcase aimed at raising money for Haitian earthquake victims. Your $10 gets you performances by Gaslight Street, Stratton & Moore (members of Po'Ridge, featuring City Paper contributor Stratton Lawrence), Classic Woodies, Skye Paige, and more. The Passionistas perform early in the adjacent El Bohio space at 6 p.m.

And far too exciting for us, not only can we hit the Tuesday Jams at the Dough, but if you miss it (or want to walk down memory lane) you can catch some videos on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/user/LowCountryBluesClub

And see if you can guess what upcoming event has me dancing on the tables and swinging from the chandeliers...???? You got it, the 20th annual LOWCOUNTRY BLUES BASH IS (almost) HERE!!! Our Shimp City Slim has worked long and hard to bring together the best bunch of blues beaters the world has ever known - or at least, the best bunch *I* have ever encountered! Go here: http://www.bluesbash.com/ to get more information and to find the schedule. Last years Blues Bash was my baptism into the blues brotherhood, and I have enjoyed every bit of it.

Drink Small will be celebrating his elventy-hundredth birthday this weekend. His actual age depends on who you ask - we will just call him 21 and leave it at that. His birthday is a city holiday in Columbia. Being that Charleston is far cooler and altogether a better place to be than Cola, mayhap we shall petition to make it a COUNTY-WIDE holiday? Naturally, official approval isn't necessary - or forthcoming. Have your own celebration and drink a toast to the "Blues Doctor"!

Back to news from Memphis:

Band winner: Grady Champion of the Mississippi Delta Blues Society of Indianola.

Second place: Karen Lovely Band, Cascade Blues Association.

Third place: Cheryl Renee with Them Bones, Cincy Blues Society

Top Guitarist: Matt Kelly of the Big Boy Little Band, of the Washington D.C. Blues
Society

Major Congrats to Canadian Blues-boy Matt Anderson who won top honors in the Solo/duo category at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis last week! Wonderful job, wonderfully done. Other winners are as follows:

Second Place: Alphonso Sanders and Bill “Howl-n-Madd” Perry from Mississippi’s Crossroads Blues Society

Best Self-Produced CD: Fire It Up! by the Laurie Morvan Band, and Crime Scene Queen by The Informants.

And if you have time on your hands, you might want to check out this website:

It features a Blues Club Index that ensures no matter where you roam, the blues will make you feel at home.
