Weekend of October 23, 24

It's the weekend once again, and we've got a few things to recommend. On Friday night there's a benefit for My Sister's House at Goldbug Island, and your ticket ($10 advance, $15 at the door) will get you a bbq dinner, drink and dessert, as well as music from two groups: Rik Cribb and the Problems, and "The Most Interesting Band In the World", a compilation of local musicians. You can see the website at www.mysistershouse.org.

And/or you may want to check out the new movie It Might Get Loud, showing at the Terrace. It features three famous guitarists: Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, The Edge of U2, and Jack White of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs -- good stuff.

On Saturday night our friends Wyatt and Ranny Garey will be playing with their band at A Dough Re Mi, starting 8ish, and will be filmed for Carolina Bands Live -- don't miss this party!!

Or you could head to the Navy Yard at Noisette, 1635 Cosgrove Ave, N. Charleston for Skinful Halloween 2009 ($25 advance, $30 at the door) with a variety of music acts, including Ivan Neville and Dumpstaphunk, and our friend Skye Paige with Bizarro Burlesque, among others. See www.skinfulhalloween.com for the details.

And of course we hope you'll come back to the Dough on Tuesday for the jam at 8:30, or come earlier if you're hungry for pizza and wings. Stuart Johnson suggested that we all should talk up the jam with our friends, by email or facebook, because we've got a lot of great music each week and would like to have an even bigger crowd to share it with. . .

And a heads-up for the following weekend -- A Dough Re Mi has Shrimp City Slim on Friday the 30th, and you may want to start planning your costume for the Halloween party at the Dough on Saturday the 31st -- always a fun time!

Also keep in mind the free blues fest in Florence SC that happens November 5-8. See www.peedeebluesbash.com for all the details -- and get over to Florence for that if you can!

Exciting times for the Lowcountry Blues Club

Hi All --

In case you haven't heard, the Lowcountry Blues Club elected new officers and board members at our meeting in early October. When you see these people you can thank them for agreeing to work to make our club even better: Tim Shaw is the new President, Stuart Johnson is Secretary, and Kelly Homan is Treasurer. And don't forget to thank Greg Cooper as the outgoing President, Lua Wells as outgoing Secretary, and Rob Lowe as outgoing Treasurer. In my next post I'll give you the details on all the new and continuing board members as well.

As a board we hope that the upcoming year will bring lots more wonderful Tuesday night jams at A Dough Re Mi, and the possible expansion of blues jams and/or shows in other venues around town as well, so more people can be exposed to the wonderful talents that we have in our club. We discussed the possibilities of an outdoor festival or two -- the sky's the limit! We also hope to have many new members of the club, in addition to keeping our current members, of course.

We also have new writers for this blog (the weekly emails) starting soon. And we're still looking for a volunteer to take over the job of keeping up with our Myspace page -- just write to us at lowcountrybluesclub@gmail.com if you're interested in helping out in this or another capacity.

Okay -- you want to know what's going on this weekend? Friday night Oct 16th finds Drink Small doing a solo acoustic show at Home Team BBQ/Sullivans Island. Then on Sat night the 17th, Drink does an electric/band show at Home Team/West Ashley, while Jeff Norwood & Backbone take the stage at Home Team/Sullivans.

There are some other special things going on Saturday as well. Shinefest is a noon-9pm benefit event at the Joe Riley Ballpark. The Whisperjets start off the music at noon, followed by multiple acts such as Sol Driven Train, The Original Wailers, and Blues Traveler. See www.shinefestcharleston.com for all the info regarding tickets ($40/$45) and such.

Or if you're in the mood for a road trip, there's a free blues fest in Columbia on Saturday. See www.columbiabluesfestival.com for details.

FYI, I always get lots of great info about music events from the Charleston City paper, so make sure you check that out each week. And I recommend that you sign up to get emails from Shrimp at www.shrimpcityslim.com, if you haven't already, because he always has a lot of blues info to share -- more than I can cover each week.

Lastly, I have to say that I hope you made it out to Rocktoberfest this past weekend, because that was an awesome music festival!! Our own Stuart Johnson ran the Moultrie News Porch Stage, doing sound for four days straight, and STILL managed to come help out with our weekly jam on Tuesday night -- that's dedication!! (Or insanity!) Dan Wright Trio, Skye Paige, Wyatt Garey Band, Stuart, The Fabulous Porch Dogs, and Cole Train all performed at the fest and showed off their stuff, and made us proud!

So have fun this weekend, be safe, and come on out Tuesday night for the LBC jam, 8:30ish, A Dough Re Mi.

Weekend of Oct 2-4 and beyond

Well, this weekend is the big blues festival in the quaint little town of Camden, SC, and I hope some of you are able to attend -- it will be a great time! For all the info, go to www.bluesbash.com/camden and check out all the upcoming performances.

Then on Sunday there's the American Music Celebration at Freshfields Village at Kiawah from 2-7pm, with Skye Paige and lots more -- and it's all free!! Also on Sunday, there's a show put on by Jesse Judy and his music students from 6-9pm at A Dough Re Mi.

On Tuesday you should come out early to Dough Re Mi for a show with Shrimp City Slim and his buddy Dr. Pickup from Paris, France! They're scheduled to start at 5:30 and there's no cover charge. Come and have a pizza, and enjoy some great music! Then the Lowcountry Blues Club is set to have a meeting at 7:30 at A Dough Re Mi, so you can stay and help us make plans for our club. We want new people to get involved as officers and board members, so we're planning to have a vote then as well. Come and share your ideas and your enthusiasm! And of course the Lowcountry Blues Club jam will start up after that, around 8:30ish. . .

And for next weekend, make your plans to attend Rocktoberfest if at all possible! This event will take place from Oct 9-12, behind the Seewee Outpost, and the number of bands scheduled to play is quite impressive. Blues club members and friends scheduled to play include Stuart Johnson, The Fabulous Porch Dogs, The Dan Wright Trio, Jeff Norwood, Skye Paige, Cole Train, the Wyatt Garey Band, and lots, lots more!! Tickets are $40 for the full weekend ($25 with a valid student i.d.), with day passes also available. It's a benefit for the Charleston County Band Instrument Fund, and free admission is given with the donation of a musical instrument. Go to www.awendawgreen.com for more info.

Have fun, and be safe!
