Upcoming events

Hi All -

Last night was another great jam at A Dough Re Mi. Don't forget to put the jam down on your calendar for next Tuesday, and every Tuesday!

Tonight (Weds the 29th) you can choose between a jam at Bowens Island run by Smoky Weiner ($5), and a barn jam at Awendaw Green (free). There's also Blues Happy Hour from 4-7pm at Mad River Grill downtown on Mondays and Wednesdays every week, 32 N. Market Street (free).

Thursday night you've got the TWS & Friends jam in Summerville at the Time Well Spent Tearoom, weather permitting. And Thursday night also finds Henry's Attic playing at Home Team / Sullivans Island for $5, and Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band playing at the Tin Roof for $10 -- all great options!

Friday night you might want to try the Windjammer to check out the Classic Woodies, Crowfield, and Cracker.

Saturday night August 1, the first battle of the Lowcountry Blues Challenge will take place -- and we want you to come!! It will take place at Halligans in West Ashley, 9pm - 1 am, and $5 is all it takes to see several great bands play: Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators, Wyatt Garey Band, Smoky Weiner and the Hot Links, and On the Hunt. This is the first of four battles all over Charleston, which will culminate in the Grand Finale Battle on Sept 19 at Rendezvous in N. Charleston. We hope you'll come to all the battles, and yell for your favorite bands to win. You can go to the blog to see the entire schedule of events: www.lowcountrybluesclub.blogspot.com -- don't miss this first ever Lowcountry Blues Challenge blues battle of the bands!!!

And for you musicians out there, I wanted to let you know that the Daniel Island Farmers Market is looking for entertainment on Thursdays, 4-7pm. They're looking for solo or duo acts especially, and although they don't have money to pay you, you'd be able to have a tip jar, and sell your cd(s) there. So, if you're interested, contact Trish at trish@vervemarketingsc.com.

The itinerary for the festival is as follows:

August 8, the following Saturday at Rendezvous American Grille, starting at 7pm, Dan Wright, SC Blues Band, Steve & the Stilettos will compete to win the second round.

August 15, three Saturdays from now at Southern Comfort Bar & Grill, starting at 7pm, Hwy 17 Blues Band (Jack Downey's band), The Fabulous Porch Dogs, Slanguage, and Circa 56 will compete to win the third round.

August 22, four Saturdays from now at A Dough Re Mi, starting at 7pm, Steel Pedals, Memphis Rich, Lil' Jimmy the Dyrti Boyz, and TWS & Friends will compete to win the fourth round. At this point in the festival, we will have our four finalists for the finale.

The Finale is Sept. 19th, at Rendezvous American Grill, starting at 2pm. Whichever of the four finalist bands wins this round will be the nominee from Lowcountry Blues Club for the 2010 International Blues Challenge in the Blues capital, Memphis, TN.

The links above allow you to check out the bands for what's in store, and locate the venues if you don't know where they are, and learn more about the International Blues Challenge. It's really exciting for the Lowcountry Blues Club to be able to put on this very first Challenge with the help of sponsors Piggly Wiggly, Ye Olde Music Shop, Southern Comfort Bar and Grill, and Lowcountry Underground magazine.

In the first week of August, Lowcountry Underground Magazine will feature an article about the club and the contest, with a few photos from the Jams we've had in the past.

Until next time, have fun and be safe.

Coastal Conservation Music Contest

I received the following from the Coastal Conservation League, click the links provided to learn more information.

Musicians and Performance Artists:

Create a three minute or less YouTube video demonstrating why you care about the Earth. The Coastal Conservation League and the Charleston Green Fair present the "Music with a Message" contest to recognize Charleston's environmentally friendly artists and bands.

WATCH THE VIDEO PROMO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM82Lbg_sEI

The second annual Green Fair promises to be a huge success. Last year's event drew over 5,000 people to Marion Square to learn about changes they can make in their lives to better the environment. This year's music lineup includes Jesse Colin Young, the lead singer of '60s sensation, the Youngbloods. Their hit song "Let's Get Together" ("C'mon people now, smile on your brother") became a soundtrack for peace in that era of great social change. The Coastal Conservation League wants you to be Jesse's co-headliner.

We're looking for musicians with a message. Convey to us your desire for a better world. Do it through a song, a lyric within a song, a lifestyle, an earth-friendly approach to touring and performing ... whatever - be creative. Then show it to us in a three-to-five minute YouTube video (e-mail submissions to grettak@scccl.org). Along with bands and musicians, we welcome entries from dance troupes, comedians, poets, and any other performance art.

Winners perform at the Charleston Green Fair on Sunday, September 27, 2009, collect cash prizes, and receive studio time. Spread your name by using art to make a difference!

Submit your video to grettak@scccl.org before July 31st. For more information, go here: http://coastalconservationleague.org/Page.aspx?pid=845

A Holiday Weekend

Hello Blues Club friends --

It's a holiday weekend, and there's lots of music to make your weekend festive! Here are some of the options we've heard about, and you can check your favorite websites and papers for even more. . .

On Friday, July 3rd, there's Deb Callahan singing the blues at A Dough Re Mi, 9:30, for a $10 cover - she has been compared to Bonnie Raitt and Etta James, so come on out! Then on Saturday night the 4th, some of our favorite teens will be playing at Home Team BBQ/West Ashley, 10 pm, $5 : the awesome band Cole Train. Be sure to check out the articles about the band in this week's City Paper. Or another Sat night option is to see T-Model Ford at Home Team/Sullivan's Island, $10 cover. For more info on all the Home team shows, go to http://www.hometeambbq.com/. As if that weren't enough choices, the band Makeshift (more talented teens) will play at the Village Tavern on Sat night as well!

On Monday there's a special new event: a Lowcountry Blues Club jam at Home Team/Sullivan's Island. We hope lots of our favorite musicians will show up to help Skye Paige and friends put on our first jam at this new location (at the moment we're planning on doing this LBC jam on the first Monday of each month, so there won't be another one at Home Team till early August). No cover.

Then Tuesday is the regular every week jam at A Dough Re Mi -- Last week we all had a lot of fun, and I'd hate for anyone to miss the great music we're sure to have this coming Tuesday night! Come and have dinner with your friends beforehand if you like. . . http://www.adoughremi.com/.

On Wednesday night, TWS and Friends (Tim Shaw) will play at Awendaw Green -- no cover charge -- http://www.awendawgreen.com/. Or you can head to Bowen's Island for the jam with Smoky Weiner and friends, $3.

Other ongoing events include the Blues Happy Hours at Mad River Grill every Monday and Weds from 4-7 with Shrimp City Slim and Juke Joint Johnny. The Thurs night jam at Time Well Spent Tea Room in Summerville. The Blues and BBQ cruises: http://www.charlestonharbortours.com/ (next ones are on July 9 and 23).

If you're up for a road trip, check out the info at http://www.greenwoodbluescruise.com/ -- the festival takes place on July 9-11, with lots of great bands playing in various venues around town.

Don't forget to go to http://www.livingblues.com/ to vote for Miss Wanda Johnson, our own South Carolina sweetheart of the blues, and if you'd like to, you can write in a vote for her cd "Hold What You Got" as best new release of the year. July 5 is the deadline to vote.

So, lots to do -- Have fun, and be safe!
