Hello Blues People,
I have encountered some kind of Virus while trying to check out Fiery Ron's and/or the Pour House sites. Everything went wild after that, but Norton seems top have fixed it. Beware when visiting these sites. Fiery Ron's in Sullivan's Isle has Sho Nuff, a funk band on Saturday night. On Saturday there is a benefit at the Sewee Outpost featuring The Blue Dogs, The Occasional Milkshake(Mark Bryan, Danielle Howle, Ed Hunnicutt, Doug Jones & Craven Melon, Triple Lindy, The Whisperjets and more. It's from 2-6 and benefits the Seee Association which does not mention its purpose in the promotion for some reason, but a good show to be sure.
Morgan Creek has Pamela Dale and Brodie Porterfield but I can't seem to find out what style of music they play except that it is original. They don't look beat up enough for the blues but hey look at Dan! There's a well kept blues dude although I think he's going to have some plastic surgery to add a few bumps and scars. Speaking of Dan let us all wish him luck in the Memphis Blues Challenge. I believe he can take the prize! Ted McKee who is very, very good if you haven't heard him, along with bassist Gary HEwitt is playing Famous Joe's on Savannah Highway on Saturday night the 16th. It is near JB Pivots and Wally Gator's OLD JOINT. Lord I could use an old joint right now myself. Speaking of myself, I will be at Bowens Island on Friday night with Steve Padgett and we welcome all who wish to jam with us, especially we could use a drummer! Bowens is going to open the new restaurant in mid February, during the Blues Bash although there won't be any official Blues Bash shows there, there may be some un-official ones! I have just booked Momma and the Blues Palace Band folks including Tommy Thunderfoot (who I wish was back among the Blues Club. Their gig will be at Bowens on May 30th during Piccolo Spoleto.
I wish I had more to add but it will be really thick next week with Blues Bash stuff and that schedule can be found and downloaded by going to or searching bluesbash.com
Drink Small's birthday (and Juke Joint Johnny's too!) is January 28th. Drink Small will be having some parties up in Columbia where his birthday has been declared an official City Holiday. In keeping with the blues tradition this holiday will not get you any time off work or overtime. But there is a plaque somewhere.... My birthday is Feb. 3rd so you may want to start planning parties and saving up for lavish gifts. Or not. Stay warm....

A BLUE New Year
HAPPY NEW YEAR BLUES BABES!!! Let us all resolve to celebrate the Blues this year, in whatever way we like the best!
This weekend is the last blast of the holiday season, and we should all go out with a big blue BANG as we ditch the old year and ring in the new one.
HOLY GUACOMOLE!! I just realized that NEW YEAR'S EVE is freakin' TONIGHT and not tomorrow night!! I thought I was just sliding this info in under the wire and instead I have left ya'll hanging high and dry with your New Year's Eve plans! Mea Culpa, my bad, and my apologies. In the interest of time and having run out of it, I will cut and paste and endeavor to post this BLOG without further ado.
At 8 pm on New Year's Eve, the Blues Doctor Drink Small and Smoky Weiner and the Hot Links will play in the covered and well heated dock on Bowens Island. This is a party you don't want to miss. Only $15 admission, full bar available. Great seafood will be available until 11. Oysters will be available as well! Old Milwaukee (the champagne of the Blues) and champagne (the blueblood of booze) toast at Midnight. Bring a sleeping bag if you're worried about driving or we'll get you a ride! Could there BE a better way to celebrate, or a location that represents all that is awesome about blues and the lowcountry? Wear your tux or your trunks, comb your hair or show up bare, whatever floats your blues-bound boat, but be there!! (I am going to be there and will be available for bashing with a wet noodle, verbal lambasting over my lateness, shivering of my timbers and hoisting of my keel exactly 15 minutes, then we will forgive and forget and enjoy the show...)
If you are not up for Blues at Bowen, you can enjoy New Year's Eve with The Wyatt Garey Band at A Dough Re Mi. Check with Stuart Johnson (allnightjohnson@gmail.com) for more details.
Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ — Sullivan's
Southern-tinged rock/soul/blues quartet Gaslight Street — singer/guitarist Campbell Brown, drummer Brooks DuBose, bassist Frank Nelson, keyboardist Jason Stokes, and various guests — recently celebrated the release of their debut album Blue Skies for Fools. "I think while so many bands try to be different from song to song and album to album, we actually try to keep it consistent to our blues/rock sound," says Brown (formerly of Live Oak). With a rotation of skillful cats joining in this week, the two sets will surely deliver some extra-special twang. (myspace.com/gaslightstreet)
Looking ahead a bit, On Saturday night Jan 2nd, Shrimp City Slim plays at the Dough, 8pm, $5.
On Tuesday, Jan 5, the LBC board will meet before the jam, at 7pm at A Dough Re Mi. Everyone is invited. If you want to be included in the driving trip to Memphis, which is Jan 20-24, bring $100 per person towards renting a vehicle to get us there.
Again, major apologies for being so late with this info. I plead ennui and general ineptitude.

Happy Holidays from the LBC!
We had a good jam this past week with Jeff Norwood as jam-master -- thanks, Jeff! And thanks to Mark Schleiss on bass and Greg Levkus on drums, rounding out the house band while Dan and Landon were out of town. We hope that all our Blues Club friends are having a happy time with friends and/or family this week, and we hope to see you back again for another Tuesday night jam in just a few days.
In the meantime, it's a quiet weekend blues-wise as far as I can tell. But if you like some rock music from time to time, and if you like the music of the Clash, you might want to go see The Sandinistas, a tribute band -- they will play at the Pour House on Saturday, Dec 26th, 9pm. Rumor has it that this is the last live show they'll be doing for the foreseeable future, so don't say we didn't warn you. . .
Be sure to keep an eye on the Dough's website (www.adoughremi.com). On Wednesday Dec 30, the band Campfield will play. And keep in mind that The Wyatt Garey Band will play there on New Year's Eve, Dec 31. I believe that the cost of the evening will be $25, but that includes some food and drink, and champagne at midnight, I'll bet. Check with Stuart for all the details (allnightjohnson@gmail.com). Another option is a Bowens Island New Years Eve, $15 With Smoky Weiner and Drink Small -- call Smoky for details, 330-4066.
Also, mark your calendar for the next LBC board meeting, which will be Tuesday, Jan 5 at 7pm. And if you want to be part of the crowd that plans to rent a vehicle to get to Memphis in, come prepared to kick in $100 per person. We plan to leave in the morning on Wednesday Jan 20, and drive back on that Sunday, Jan 24th. We hope that the $100 will cover the vehicle and the gas costs, but we've never done this before, so there's a chance that there'd be a need to add in a bit more for gas for the trip home, but we'll have to wait and see. . .
Wishing you a happy holiday season, and much good music in the year ahead!!

Blues for your weekend
Hello Blues People (and animals). Here’s what I’ve got for this week: Weekend gigs at Dough Re Mi are Friday 12/18, The Highway 17 Blues Band-10pm $5 cover andSaturday 12/19 it’s Jeff Norwood's Dobro Christmas Show-9pm. Go to www.adoughremi.com for the full schedule.
Hometeam BBQ West Ashley has Joe Taylor’s trio Wicked Felinas on Thursday December 17th I know Joe Taylor. If you want to hear the guitar being played please go see his trio. Usually Stevie Kent plays drums and Paul Tucker on the bass. I could go on about who all of them they have played with but you might not believe me.
Danielle Howle and her group play on Saturday the 19th. One of the great local songwriters and performers.
At Sullivan’s Island Hometeam they have a sort of throwback celebration of Bert’s Bar with the Bert’s Bar Christmas Reunion this Friday and Saturday with Burnside Exploration. I am hoping this has something to do with the influence of iconic bluesman R.L. Burnside and his son who is part of the North Mississippi All Stars. Also appearing are Rik Cribb, Graham Whorley, Triple Lindy and others. Mac Leaphart plays on Thursday.
Ann Caldwell and Loose Fitt play the the Jazz Factory at the South of Broadway Theater, 1080 Montagu Avenue in North Charleston on Saturday from 7-10pm. $20 tix covers dinner, beverages and dancing. Check out www.anncaldwell.com She welcomes local musicians to join the band but please don’t go up there just to entertain yourself. You should have something specific in mind to add to the band and the enjoyment of the people Ann will be trying to entertain! Play something that fits what she’s trying to do and don’t just “noodle” around.
Steve Padgett and myself, Smoky Weiner will have a little jam at Bowens as we do every Friday night from 6:30 until 10. You can come and play anything you want at this jam because its more just for fun. On Saturday Steve Padgett and I will play at Iacofano’s in Mt. Pleasant which is at 625 Coleman Blvd. near Wild Wings. You can bring three cans of food or a toy and get to chow down on their appetizer buffet for free!
The Mill on Montague Av. in North Charleston has Chuck “The Cat” Morris and Shrimp City Slim on Tuesday night December 22nd. The Mill is smoker friendly if that is important to you.
