Correction and addition

Hi all --

I'm sorry to report that Tommy Thunderfoot will not be playing at Fleet Landing on Thursdays after all, as the venue cancelled their live music. So Tommy's looking for some new gigs -- let him know if you've got any leads!

And Tim Shaw has let us know that on Thursday June 25th, from 4-7, Earth Fare (at 74 Folly Road) is having a special event for the Lowcountry Food Bank. Both Tim's band and Cole Train will play, and he says it's free. . .

the weekend

Hi Blues Club friends --

Here are a few upcoming shows that we've heard about for this weekend. It's a good idea to double-check the info before heading out to a show though -- since things can change, or we could make a mistake on an event (though we try not to!)

First off, Cowboy Mouth is playing at the Windjammer on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They are more rock than blues, but they do put on a great live show. It's $20 on Fri and Sat, $15 for the Sunday show.

On Friday night the 19th at Home Team on Sullivan's Island (formerly Bert's Bar) will be Robert Paige and the Holy City Sinners for some raucous blues. Also on Friday night, Petty Thieves (a Tom Petty tribute band) will play at the Home Team BBQ in West Ashley, performing the entire album "Full Moon Fever" -- could be fun!

On Saturday the 20th, our friends in the Wyatt Garey Band will perform at 6pm at Island Times Beach Surf Shop on the Isle of Palms, donation accepted but not required. And also at 6pm the Whisperjets (teens from Wando with a great rock/jazz sound) have a cd release party at 52.5 Records downtown. Later on Saturday night, our friend Stuart All-Night Johnson will play with his band Allnightkungfu at the Village Tavern: the first band to play is Campfield, then Allnightkungfu, then Vertigo.

On Sunday the 21st, Robert Lighthouse plays at 7pm at the Circular Church, 150 Meeting Street, downtown, for $10.

Don't forget to come down to Dough Re Mi on Tuesday night for the jam -- last week was excellent, with plenty of old friends and new faces as well, and a good time was had by all! Wednesdays you've got either the Awendaw Green barn jam, or the jam at Bowens Island with Smoky Weiner and friends, 8pm. Thursdays there's Tim Shaw's jam in Summerville, and Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators at Fleet Landing at 10pm in downtown Charleston-- both Thursday events are weather permitting.

Also on Thursday the 25th, the Kings of Thieves with friends Rob Lowe, Sammy Derrick and John Shafer will play at the Joe Riley Stadium from 7-9pm for the kickball finals, and your $5 gets you all the beer you want, so I've heard.

And a brief heads-up for the following weekend: I would strongly advise a trip to Awendaw Green on Sat the 27th for the Sea Turtle Relief benefit -- our friend Jeff Norwood will play, along with the Whisperjets, Webb Wilder, and an awesome band called Holy Ghost Tent Revival -- don't miss it!

This Week and this Weekend's Shows...

Good evening, Blues Club fans. Here's a rundown of this weekend's events.

Tommy Thunderfoot will be playing Thursday, June 11th, at the Fleet Landing (Downtown, near Concord and Cumberland), starting at 10pm. Shrimp City Slim has a harbor tour aboard the Carolina Belle, with food provided by HomeTeam BBQ. Get your more information and tickets here.

On Friday, June 12th, Dan Wright will be playing at the Kickin' Chicken-Mt. Pleasant with Soul Captive. A Dough Re Mi features Tin Pan Man (feat. members of Decollard Peoples), starting at 9pm. Skye Paige and the Original Recipe will also be playing with Mudcat at the HomeTeam BBQ on Sullivans Island, starting at 10pm. Earlier that night, Shrimp City Slim will be playing at Freshfields Village from 6-9pm, outside. Freshfields has other music coming all summer long, so stayed tuned. If you go, be sure to bring a folding chair, maybe some sunscreen and bug spray, too.

On Saturday, June 13th, Jeff Norwood will be playing at Whaley's on Edisto Beach, starting at 9pm. Mudcat and Skye Paige and the Original Recipe also play at the original HomeTeam BBQ in West Ashley, starting at 10pm. Our old friend Jeff Liberty will be playing the Raven's Nest in Sumter, starting at 8pm.

Mark your calendars for two Kings of Thieves upcoming shows. Rob, Sammy and John will be playing at Joe Riley Stadium on June 25th, 7-9pm for a $5 cover; then on June 27th, they play O'Malleys from 10pm-1am.

Until next time, have a lot of fun and be safe.

Battle of the Bands

Hello Blues Fans --

We are currently planning the first Lowcountry Blues Challenge. This event will allow the winner to be nominated to appear and compete in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN in 2010.

We are planning a battle of the band type challenge to take place in 4 venues in the Charleston area during the month of August. We already have two venues confirmed with plans to secure the other two shortly. In September we are planning a festival style event for the finale.

BAND CALL: Any band interested in competing or performing in this event needs to complete a Band Form. The Lowcountry Blues Club will consider all the bands that request consideration, then issue an invitation to the bands that are chosen. To accept an invitation to play, each band would then need to send in a $25 entry fee by the date indicated by the Lowcountry Blues Club.

To obtain a Band Form you can contact Tim Shaw at timothy.d.shaw@comcast.net. I will email you the form and send any new information which may arise. If you participate, your band will perform on one Saturday in August at one of the four venues. We will do our best to have you play on a date that works well for you. You will be judged according to the rules established by the International Blues Challenge. This will include a vote by the fans so bring everyone out to help support your group. Then the four bands with the top scores in the battles will earn an invitation to compete in the finale event in September. The grand prize winner will receive various prizes, including the Lowcountry Blues Club nomination to compete at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN in 2010.

Sponsor opportunity: We also have the opportunity for sponsors at several levels. I can email you a sponsor form if you are interested in helping with this endeavour. The more help we get, the larger the event and better advertising for your business. I am happy to announce that sponsors of the Lowcountry Blues Challenge so far include Piggly Wiggly, Ye Olde Music, and Southern Comfort Bar & Grill. So join the Lowcountry Blues Club for a great event to spread the news and the blues to the Lowcountry. For sponsor information contact Tim Shaw at the email address above.

Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming news for this event.

Weekend plans and more

Hi Music Fans --

Here are some ideas for what to do this weekend, but please keep in mind that there's way more going on than we can fit into one little blog. So in addition to our suggestions here, be sure to check out the myspace pages or websites of your favorite musicians, check out the City Paper, the Post & Courier, etc.

That said, we will continue to present you with a few of the best options that we've heard about. Friday afternoon (June 7) Drink Small will play at the Mad River Bar and Grill in downtown Charleston from 4-7pm for $10 cash. Also there's Rev. Palmer and the Messengers of Hope (gospel) playing at the Sweetgrass Festival at Laing Middle School on Hwy. 17 in Mt. Pleasant, around 5:00 pm. Later that night you have Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators under the big top at Wescott Plantation, 5000 Wescott Blvd, Summerville, from 8-11pm. Also the Jeff Norwood Trio playing at the new Home Team BBQ location on Sullivan's Island.

Then on Saturday Rev. Palmer and the Messengers of Hope play again, this time in N. Chas at the Park Circle Rec Center at 4pm. That evening you might want to check out a local band called Henry's Attic that plays classic rock and roots music. They play from around 7-10pm at Yo Burrito in Mt. Pleasant.

For Monday night, Tim Shaw recommends the indie rock band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, playing at the Windjammer on Isle of Palms, 10pm. Check them out on youtube.

Don't forget the weekly Lowcountry Blues Club jam on Tuesdays, every Tuesday, at A Dough Re Mi in Mt. Pleasant, starting 8ish. On Wednesday nights you've got Awendaw Green on one side of town starting 8ish, and Smoky Wiener's jam at Bowens Island 8pm ($3) on the other side of town. On Thursdays you have the Tim Shaw and Friends jam at the Time Well Spent Tearoom in Summerville, and now also every Thursday night Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators at Fleet Landing, 186 Concord St, behind the Custom House in downtown Charleston, starting at 10pm. Both Thursday options are weather permitting.

And here's a heads-up for the following weekend: Skye Paige and her friends Mudcat from Atlanta will be playing again. Those who saw them at Bowens Island recently had a great time! They'll be at the Home Team BBQ on Sullivans Island on Fri June 12, and the W. Ashley Home Team on Sat June 13th.

So find an outing (or two or three) that appeals to you, and have a good time!
