Compliments of the Season!

Stevie Ray Vaughan sang “Time is all that we got. So, Baby, let’s take it”.  If you’re reading this, you probably wish that Stevie Ray could still sing those lines today.  Time is a precious commodity.  Time is not of an unlimited quantity.  My guess is that most of us take “time” for granted.  We assume that we can do it “tomorrow”.   Can we be sure?

Each of the last couple years around this time, I wrote about giving the Gift of Music.  I wrote about being thankful for having the Lowcountry Blues Club.  I wrote about the good fortune provided by the weekly Blues Jams.  I wrote about the circumstances and the people that brought me to my first jam and keep me coming back.  These sentiments are certainly points that I would like to share once again.  However, this year I would like to ask everyone to hit the “pause” button.  Take the time to share.  Share your time.  Share your love.  Share peace.

Remember: “share” is not simply the word that we click on to post something on Facebook.  Sure, those quotes, pictures, songs and sentiments can be nice.  But are they really a tangible ‘shared’ experience? Share your time.  Stop by and visit a friend or relative.  Make the phone call you have been meaning to make.  Share your love. Shake someone’s hand. Smile.  Hug.  Share peace.  Imagine.

Compliments of the season.

VOTE! City Music Awards Nominees feature list of Blues Club Members.

Our Blues Club members and friends are well represented among this year’s nominees for the City Paper Music Awards. Log on to www.Charlestoncitypaper.com and vote for: The Louie D Project (also Louie D and Paul Walls individually), Momma & The Redemption, Sarah Cole & The Hawkes, Johnny Mac and the Booty Ranch, Skye Paige & The Original Recipe, Fowler’s Mustache, Old You, Hey Rocco, Mac Leaphart, Shovels & Rope…, Old friends Young MI, Elise Testone and Jon Hagar are also nominated. Congrats to all.

BUT, can somebody tell me how not one of our guitarists or bassists received a nod??? That is nuts! No disrespect to anyone who is nominated but many of our guitarists and bassists are truly world class talents and deserve recognition.

Also, why is Momma & The Redemption in the Funk/Soul category and not in the Blues category? Oops!

That being said, get out and see for yourself!

Music for a cause!

Fowler’s Mustache has regularly been listed here among the weekly recommended events. The Post and Courier, The City Paper, Facebook and many other outlets have been giving updates regarding the status of their guitarist, Nick Collins.  Nick was recently in a horrible accident where he was ran over by an as-yet unidentified 18 wheeler and subsequently lost his leg in addition to suffering a broken spine, pelvis and far too many broken bones to list.  Nurses are slowly taking Nick out of the medically induced coma.  There have already been many surgeries with countless more required.  Benefits and blood drives have begun with more to come – two are noted below.

On a personal note, I hope that as many of you as possible can find a way to show support for Nick.  When I moved here in March of 2010, Nick (and Thomas McElwee) were two of the first musicians that I met.  They were doing an early evening duo performance at Mello Mushroom and ultimately, they invited me out to sit in with them later that night at Midtown.  They packed the place and I had a blast!  Since that night, I have tried to catch every show that my schedule would allow.  There is always a large, enthusiastic crowd and it is always a treat to see Nick and the rest of the guys.  Fowler’s Mustache has been one of the busiest and most popular bands in the Lowcountry and I am certainly anxious to see and hear Nick perform again.

Visit these links for updates on his condition, details regarding how to give blood, how to donate and upcoming benefit shows.

Lowcountry Blues Benefit For Paul Walls Tonight

I have often written here about what a wonderful community the Lowcountry Blues Club is.  The support, friendship and comaraderie that exists among its members is an amazing thing.  Tonight, we have a chance to express that in an deeper way.

As you probably heard, Paul Walls (drummer for the Louie D Project) recently lost his one-year old son. The boy went into surgery and never woke up. While most parents of one-year old children are worried about their child learning to walk without falling into things, Paul is faced with the devastation of loss and the reality of having to pay costly funeral expenses.

While it’s true that there may seem to be a number of benefits wrestling for our time and money, this one feels different. As a parent, I can’t imagine having to face what Paul is going through. If you don’t know Paul, The City Paper printed a fantastic feature story on him about two years ago:

http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/charleston/drummer-paul-walls-goes-from-the-infantry-to-the-stage/Content?oid=2309256

Come to the Jam tonight at Home Team BBQ in West Ashley and show your support. Offer a dollar or whatever you can. If you can do more or know of someone who can, contact J.R. Getches.

Thank you.

The New Smokin’ Hot Home of The Blues: Smokey’s Place

A Lowcountry Blues Club Jam Night has always been a special event. The Jams at A Dough Re Mi were truly eye opening. When “The Dough” was forced to re-locate, Jam Night was forced to move also. We were lucky to land at Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ in West Ashley. New talent arrived and the energy and musicianship ratcheted up a notch. So much so, that the thought of a second Jam Night wouldn’t subside. Through the extraordinary efforts of Captain Kirk, Jam Night II was launched at Smokey’s Place Sport’s Bar & Grill every Sunday at a worker-friendly time of 5 – 9 pm. Since November 13th, 2011, every Sunday at the corner of Remount and Rhett in North Charleston has been a true celebration of REAL music – Live!

However, that is just where the story gets rollin’. Owner Smokey Blasé has truly embraced and supported the Lowcountry Blues Club. Smokey’s Place opened in February 2010 and features what I honestly believe are the best burgers in town. They started with music on Friday and Saturday nights. Thanks to the Blues Jam, they added Sunday’s and now Smokey has started to feature bands on Thursday nights as well. Highway 17 Blues Band, Victoria Station and Starling have long been regular acts to grace Smokey’s stage. Since the success of the Sunday Jams, Smokey has added Club luminaries Momma & The Redemption, Skye Paige, Sarah Cole, The Port City Prophets, The Mason Dixon Band, Nate Mills and Southern Sweetgrass among others to his entertainment roster. Proving that Smokey’s Place is a major proponent, advocate and supporter of the Lowcountry Blues Club.

This week, Smokey aims to prove that Smokey’s Place is THE destination for live music.

I am personally excited to be bringing a re-energized Mason Dixon Band back into Smokey’s Thursday night at 8 pm. The twin lead guitars of Ryan Lee Lockett and Martin Carmack first dueled and harmonized on Smokey’s stage at a spring Sunday Jam and now highlight a Mason Dixon Band that I am proud to be a part of.
https://www.facebook.com/MasonDixonBandSC

Thursday at Smokey’s will also feature LIVE ART by Charleston’s Finest Lady Artists. Their work has been featured in dozens of venues all over the Lowcountry. www.facebook.com/Charlestons.Finest.Artists

Since Momma & The Redemption are truly Blues Club royalty, Momma & Poppa’s offspring, Jojo Wall, must be the Prince of the Blues! An amazing triple threat on bass, vocals and harmonica, Jojo has put down the bass and will focus on being the front man for Freight. They make their inaugural performance this Friday night at 9 pm. Having retired from his day job, Poppa is now playing full time, Big Daddy Dale is on Keys, Mark Schleis is playing bass… come bear witness to locomotive level power! www.reverbnation.com/freightmusic

Saturday and Sunday, Smokey is hosting a Lemon Drop Dart Run and Blues Fest Benefit for Nancy Jackson Ward. Nancy is an active Patriot Guard Riders member who was injured in a bike accident when her bike was struck by a car. The Bike run is Saturday afternoon and Smokey will have raffles, food & drink specials all weekend. The live music starts at 2 pm on Saturday with East Of Trouble followed by The Port City Prophets and St. Bryan’s Taxi and more! Look for sets by many of your favorite bands and surprise guests throughout the weekend. The festivities conclude with the Sunday Jam at 5 featuring Big Daddy Cade, Bill Nantz and myself (Scott Bucholtz).

For more details, go to https://www.facebook.com/events/263142920457745/

If Smokey’s Place isn’t already on your list of frequented establishments, now is certainly the time “if you can get your mind together and come across…”. Come for the food, the great entertainment or to simply show your support.

Guitars and drums you can hear in the distance
I think they’re calling your names
Maybe now you can’t hear them, but you will
If you just go to Smokey’s Place

If you’ve already experienced Smokey’s, there is no better time to come back for some more!

Captain Kirk's Equipment Trailer Stolen!

EQUIPMENT TRAILER STOLEN!
For the 3rd time in the past 18 months we’re having to report that a member of our family has been victimized by criminals. As you may already know, Captain Kirk’s trailer was stolen from his home earlier this week. Worse yet, it was full of many of his prized possessions. Namely, the custom “Captain America” double-bass drum kit that was all the rage just three weeks ago at the Sunday Jam. This kit is very unique and identifiable – please keep an eye out for it! And call the police if you see it...

Check out all the many, many great events on the web for Spoleto, and especially the Piccolo Spoleto Blues series! And mark your calendars for Monday, May 28 (Memorial Day) from 1-6pm at Bowens Island, when the Lowcountry Blues Club hosts a jam along with the Jazz Club. Bring a picnic, or get food from the grill there, cheap. The $10 ticket price will help support both the Blues Club and the Jazz Club. It's a Piccolo event, and you can get tickets online, or at the venue.

Also, on Thursday, April 5, at 9pm at The Brick: The Kilborn Alley Blues Band, a ferocious young band in the Chicago blues tradition, receiving unprecedented attention for their song writing and performing, will play a special performance at The Brick, 213 East Bay Street. They sent us this info:

The band's new album, entitled FOUR, was number one on blues radio in the U.S. in December 2011, according to the prestigious LIVING BLUES magazine; in February the album was the number one "Pick to Click" on the BB King's Bluesville service of Sirius radio. With the youngest members just turned thirty, the band has received an astonishing three Blues Music Award nominations (2007, 2008, 2011), the highest international awards in blues music.

Kilborn Alley features the great guitar playing long associated with the blues, but is especially known for the soulful singing of Andrew Duncanson who has been repeatedly described as among the very best living blues singers. This is a band that get a whole room of people on their feet dancing, and even singing along. Kilborn Alley stomps out songs such as "I'm Spent," "Watch It," and "'Rents House Boogie," and catches audiences by surprise with their combo-sized soul as in their slow burner "Better Off Now." That last song was named the "Best Blues Song of 2010" by BLUES BLAST magazine. For more information on Kilborn Alley see http://www.kilbornalley.com. They were also a 2011 Blues Music Award Nominee for Best Band.
