Lowcountry Blues Benefit For Paul Walls Tonight

I have often written here about what a wonderful community the Lowcountry Blues Club is.  The support, friendship and comaraderie that exists among its members is an amazing thing.  Tonight, we have a chance to express that in an deeper way.

As you probably heard, Paul Walls (drummer for the Louie D Project) recently lost his one-year old son. The boy went into surgery and never woke up. While most parents of one-year old children are worried about their child learning to walk without falling into things, Paul is faced with the devastation of loss and the reality of having to pay costly funeral expenses.

While it’s true that there may seem to be a number of benefits wrestling for our time and money, this one feels different. As a parent, I can’t imagine having to face what Paul is going through. If you don’t know Paul, The City Paper printed a fantastic feature story on him about two years ago:

Come to the Jam tonight at Home Team BBQ in West Ashley and show your support. Offer a dollar or whatever you can. If you can do more or know of someone who can, contact J.R. Getches.

Thank you.

The New Smokin’ Hot Home of The Blues: Smokey’s Place

A Lowcountry Blues Club Jam Night has always been a special event. The Jams at A Dough Re Mi were truly eye opening. When “The Dough” was forced to re-locate, Jam Night was forced to move also. We were lucky to land at Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ in West Ashley. New talent arrived and the energy and musicianship ratcheted up a notch. So much so, that the thought of a second Jam Night wouldn’t subside. Through the extraordinary efforts of Captain Kirk, Jam Night II was launched at Smokey’s Place Sport’s Bar & Grill every Sunday at a worker-friendly time of 5 – 9 pm. Since November 13th, 2011, every Sunday at the corner of Remount and Rhett in North Charleston has been a true celebration of REAL music – Live!

However, that is just where the story gets rollin’. Owner Smokey Blasé has truly embraced and supported the Lowcountry Blues Club. Smokey’s Place opened in February 2010 and features what I honestly believe are the best burgers in town. They started with music on Friday and Saturday nights. Thanks to the Blues Jam, they added Sunday’s and now Smokey has started to feature bands on Thursday nights as well. Highway 17 Blues Band, Victoria Station and Starling have long been regular acts to grace Smokey’s stage. Since the success of the Sunday Jams, Smokey has added Club luminaries Momma & The Redemption, Skye Paige, Sarah Cole, The Port City Prophets, The Mason Dixon Band, Nate Mills and Southern Sweetgrass among others to his entertainment roster. Proving that Smokey’s Place is a major proponent, advocate and supporter of the Lowcountry Blues Club.

This week, Smokey aims to prove that Smokey’s Place is THE destination for live music.

I am personally excited to be bringing a re-energized Mason Dixon Band back into Smokey’s Thursday night at 8 pm. The twin lead guitars of Ryan Lee Lockett and Martin Carmack first dueled and harmonized on Smokey’s stage at a spring Sunday Jam and now highlight a Mason Dixon Band that I am proud to be a part of.

Thursday at Smokey’s will also feature LIVE ART by Charleston’s Finest Lady Artists. Their work has been featured in dozens of venues all over the Lowcountry. www.facebook.com/Charlestons.Finest.Artists

Since Momma & The Redemption are truly Blues Club royalty, Momma & Poppa’s offspring, Jojo Wall, must be the Prince of the Blues! An amazing triple threat on bass, vocals and harmonica, Jojo has put down the bass and will focus on being the front man for Freight. They make their inaugural performance this Friday night at 9 pm. Having retired from his day job, Poppa is now playing full time, Big Daddy Dale is on Keys, Mark Schleis is playing bass… come bear witness to locomotive level power! www.reverbnation.com/freightmusic

Saturday and Sunday, Smokey is hosting a Lemon Drop Dart Run and Blues Fest Benefit for Nancy Jackson Ward. Nancy is an active Patriot Guard Riders member who was injured in a bike accident when her bike was struck by a car. The Bike run is Saturday afternoon and Smokey will have raffles, food & drink specials all weekend. The live music starts at 2 pm on Saturday with East Of Trouble followed by The Port City Prophets and St. Bryan’s Taxi and more! Look for sets by many of your favorite bands and surprise guests throughout the weekend. The festivities conclude with the Sunday Jam at 5 featuring Big Daddy Cade, Bill Nantz and myself (Scott Bucholtz).

If Smokey’s Place isn’t already on your list of frequented establishments, now is certainly the time “if you can get your mind together and come across…”. Come for the food, the great entertainment or to simply show your support.

Guitars and drums you can hear in the distance
I think they’re calling your names
Maybe now you can’t hear them, but you will
If you just go to Smokey’s Place

If you’ve already experienced Smokey’s, there is no better time to come back for some more!
