Weekend of Sept 25-27

Hi All --

On Friday night Eric Lindell will be at the Pour House celebrating his new cd "Gulf Coast Highway", 9:30pm, $10.

On Saturday you might want to catch Johnny Mac and the Booty Ranch at Wild Wing/Mt. Pleasant.

Check out the Charleston City Paper, the Preview section of the Post & Courier, and your favorite websites for more options, too. And try to make it to A Dough Re Mi on Tuesday night for the jam if you can.

We're hoping to expand the Lowcountry Blues Club board with new ideas and new members. Please consider becoming active in making this club more of a presence in the Charleston area. We need new officers, new board members, new writers for this blog (the email newsletter), someone to deal with our myspace page, etc. We need your help! Write to us at lowcountrybluesclub@gmail.com, or find a board member to talk to at one of the jams. . .

Thanks!

What a weekend!

Well, the First Annual Lowcountry Blues Challenge ended with an amazing finale show at Rendezvous on Saturday night. There was a great crowd, and lots of great music. The Fabulous Porch Dogs kicked things off a little after 7, after which Sarah Cole and the Mojo Men surprised the folks who had never seen them play before, and had them asking: "Who IS that girl?!" Then the Dan Wright Trio kept the party going, and Tommy Thunderfoot closed out the evening with a high energy set full of great tunes.

All these bands are winners in our opinion, and thanks to our sponsors, they all went home with prizes, too. We want to thank Awendaw Green for their generous donation of a full day's studio time to the first place winner, and a half day for second place. We also thank Piggly Wiggly, Ye Olde Music Shop, Southern Comfort Bar and Grill, and Lowcountry Underground magazine.

So, who goes to Memphis as our nomination for the International Blues Challenge in January 2010? That would be our first place winner: The Dan Wright Trio!! Second place went to Sarah Cole and the Mojo Men, and Sarah was picked to go to Memphis as well, for the Youth Showcase!!

We are proud to have all these wonderful musicians living and making music here in the Charleston area! And we're proud that many of them are members and supporters of the Lowcountry Blues Club as well. If you come out to A Dough Re Mi in Mt Pleasant, this Tuesday and every Tuesday, 8ish, you'll get to see some of these guys playing at the weekly Lowcountry Blues Club jam -- so come on out!

Also, we need new members and officers for the Lowcountry Blues Club board. If you're interested, please email us at lowcountrybluesclub@gmail.com. We usually meet just once a month -- currently that's on the first Tuesday of the month, at 7:00, before the jam. We also need someone who would like to keep our myspace page updated, and we need people to help with writing the weekly email newsletter. So consider your options, and get involved -- The more people who help out, the better our club will be!

Lowcountry Blues Club Challenge Finals!!!

The Lowcountry Blues Club's big event is here: the Lowcountry Blues Challenge Finals! The show starts at 7 at Rendezvous in N. Charleston this Saturday night, Sept 19th, but get there early to help out, and/or to get a good seat! Playing are some of our favorite people: Sarah Cole and her Mojo Men, the Fabulous Porch Dogs, Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators, and the Dan Wright group -- four great bands! Rendezvous is at 7832 Rivers Avenue, not far from the N. Chas Barnes & Noble -- we hope to see you there! Tix are $10, or $5 if you show your blues card at the door (or some of you have already got your tickets, so don't forget to bring them with you. . .)

Weekend Plans, Sept 11-13

Hi All --

I've got to rush to get this news out before I go off to work. This Friday night Soul Captive (with Dan Wright) is scheduled to play at the Kickin' Chicken in West Ashley, 10pm. They're playing out a lot these days -- see the full schedule at their myspace page www.myspace.com/492771579.

On Saturday (Sept. 12) there's a great free event called Kenny Gate held out at the North Charleston Coliseum, all day before the Kenny Chesney show. It's sponsored by Awendaw Green and WEZL, with lots of great acts playing: Danielle Howle, Mac Leaphart Band, Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band, White Rhino, Lauren Bevins, Pierce Edens, Woodwork Road Show, and the Holy Ghost Tent Revival -- be there! (Parking at the Coliseum is $5)

Then Saturday night our friend Wyatt Garey plays at A Dough Re Mi, 9pm, and that's always a fun time -- They've got a new drummer they're excited about, so come out and hear some good music!

Sunday there's a Beatles vs. Rolling Stones tribute show at the Tin Roof in West Ashley, starting 6ish pm, and it's a benefit, so your $10 will go to a good cause.

Then Monday and Weds nights are Mad River Grill Blues Happy Hours, Tuesday night 8pm is the Dough Re Mi jam, Weds night is the barn jam at Awendaw Green or Smoky's jam at Bowens Island, and then Thurs night is the harbor cruise with Shrimp City Slim, http://www.charlestonharbortours.com/.

The following Saturday night the 19th is the big finale event for the Lowcountry Blues Challenge, held at Rendezvous in N. Charleston, $10. The start time for that has changed, so please make a note that the start time is now 7pm, so you may want to arrive by 6:30 or so to get a good seat. We're excited about all the finalists: The Fabulous Porch Dogs, Sarah Cole and her Mojo Men, Dan Wright Trio, and Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators -- don't miss this great show!!

Also, the Lowcountry Blues Club needs a few people who are excited about this club to volunteer to run for a position on the board. We'll be holding elections soon, so email us at lowcountrybluesclub@gmail.com if you're interested -- thanks!

Looking even farther ahead, here's a few things to mark on your calendar. Eric Lindell comes to the Pour House on Friday night, Sept 25th, celebrating his new release "Gulf Coast Highway". He puts on a great show, so keep this date in mind.

And Oct 1-3 is the Carolina Downhome Blues Festival in Camden, SC, organized by Shrimp City Slim -- a very cool blues crawl in a quaint little town. This is a great chance to get out of town and take a blues holiday! See www.bluesbash.com/camden for details. Then Sunday Oct 4 in Kiawah is the American Music Celebration at Freshfields Village, as well. More details to come.

So we hope you have a great weekend with some great music, and we hope to see you at the Tuesday night jam for sure!

Labor Day weekend

Well, it's been a busy week, and I'm running out of time to get organized for this weekend. I haven't heard about a lot going on this weekend (or else I can't remember what I heard), so this post will be shorter than usual. I do know that Monster Music will be having a showcase of different artists who have played at Awendaw Green, including Jeff Norwood, Danielle Howle, and the Whisperjets, among others. The event takes place Saturday (the 5th) from 2-8pm, and the store will be having sales as well (and their sale prices can be really great!) -- so come on out!

And start getting excited for the Lowcountry Blues Challenge Finale event on September 19th, with four great bands competing for the nomination to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN in 2010. Don't miss seeing Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators, The Dan Wright Trio, The Fabulous Porch Dogs, and Sarah Cole and the Mojo Men!! More info on this coming soon. . .

So have fun this weekend, be safe too, and come out to hear some great music on Tuesday night at the Lowcountry Blues Club jam at A Dough Re Mi, 8ish.
